On a Roll

Towels are essential in any household, but towel storage can be a pain. I like having my towels handy no matter what room I am in. But homes don’t always have enough built-in storage. So I had to get creative.

Raising two kids on my own, I never really had the time to care too much about home decor. But later on, when I worked in real estate, I would stage my listings. I learned through trial and error and through observation what worked, and what looked good doing so. One thing I really focused on was towel storage.

I took a cue from fancy hotels and airbnb’s. I noted that they would roll bath towels and hand towels for a lovely presentation. While lovely, it wasn’t always practical. But I found some ways to use those rolled towels to illustrate beautiful and practical storage.

I would hang wire baskets in the bath and roll and store bath towels. Some clients had open built in shelves and cubbies in the bathroom. I would fill the cubbies with tightly rolled towels. Rolled towels take up less space than a bulky folded towel.

In my own kitchen, I have a big collection of kitchen towels. I am sure I am not the only one! I don’t like folding towels and placing them in drawers for many reasons: one, drawer space is precious in the kitchen; two, I don’t like opening and closing drawers all the time; and three, the towels never fit in the drawers and get stuck all the time (because I tend to stuff them in there). So I rolled up my towels and tucked them into a beautiful basket and placed it on the kitchen counter where they are handy and decorative. You can fit a LOT of rolled kitchen towels in a basket.
