A Little Family Time

I collect ceramics and pottery including Raku. I don’t have a lot, just a few favorite pieces I have owned for decades. These three smaller pieces of burnished Raku look great on my mantel. A super organic, natural look that I love.

My kids know I love ceramics. So my oldest figured I would love a large hand-thrown pitcher as a gift. I certainly did. I just didn’t know where it would go. It sat in the kitchen for a couple of days before I tried it on the mantel with the three smaller Raku pieces.

I tried a couple different groupings on the mantel before settling on one that looked natural. I stepped back to admire the new piece, when it hit me. This little family of ceramics represented my own little family.

Once this idea dawned on me, I couldn’t shake it. I was represented by the new pitcher; the tallest of the small pieces was my oldest, the next tallest piece was my youngest, and the shorter piece similar to the tallest was my oldest’s wife (did you follow that?)

Might seem corny to you, but I love it. I enjoy finding special meaning in things. And there aren’t many things more special than family.

Now whenever I rest my eyes on this little foursome, I am reminded of my son’s gift and how close we are. Then I walk over and move all the pieces just a little nearer to each other. Corny, quirky, silly but fun. I smile 🙂
