In January of 1964, the Beatles were staying at the George V Hotel in Paris. They were booked to play at the Olympia for several nights while during their stay. While there, they learned that their single, I Want to Hold Your Hand, went quickly to No. 1 in the States. Fortunately, they were booked to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show three times in February. Everything was falling into place for the Beatles to take America by storm.
They also held their first live concert in the States at the Washington Coliseum on February 11th. In my opinion, it’s the best live performance I’ve seen of them. See it here: The Beatles.
They enjoyed New York night life, held a myriad of interviews, played Carnegie Hall, received gold records, met Cassius Clay, made a splash in Miami, and so much more. Photographers, newsmen and camera crews followed them around wherever they went. As did the fans!
They squeezed in so much living in only a little over a couple of weeks in America before returning triumphantly to the UK.
Here’s my fun video of that time. Enjoy!
