My dad was born in South Carolina, and my mom was born in Georgia. Both grew up and were married in Georgia. Both were quite young in 1947 when they married. Dad was just 18, but lied on the marriage certificate, stating he was 21. Mom was just shy of 18, but stated she was 18. Based on my research, this was not uncommon.
None of their parents went to high school. They were farmers and also worked in the local textile mills. Very common. Both my parents worked in the local textile mill at one point or another, alongside their parents. My dad was in the Navy for two years, between the ages of 16 and 18. No high school for him, either.
My mom did go to high school. She also studied at a beauty college for a while.
Both so young and full of life and hope for the future. I am sure they took it for granted they were going to have to continue to work hard if they were going to have a family of their own.
